ABOUT THE INITIATIVE

The Friday afternoon stretches ahead of you. Everyone is lined up at their starting blocks, ready to blast forward into the long-awaited weekend. Nobody is thinking about bugs. Unfinished tasks eye you with reproach: it’s clear no good line of code will see the light of day until Monday. And then… the Product Manager barges in to share the happy news: an urgent release, ASAP. And you realize you won’t leave the computer desk anytime soon.
We’ll talk about this and other joys of programming and share our tips on how to make coding fun, rather than torture, at our new, regular meetups: “Deploy on Friday”.

AGENDA

18:10 – 18:50

Working with legacy code – how to sleep soundly after a release?

Marek Chrapek – host

Everyone would love to write greenfield software… Especially one where you can experiment because it is still in production. No users mean no error reports, and no error reports mean sound sleep. Does working with legacy systems and large tech debt have to lead to sleepless nights? Is rewriting the app the only way?
After many years of working with various systems at different development stages, I have more than one sleepless night under my belt. In my talk, I am going to share methods and tools that have helped me to not wake up panic-stricken in the middle of the night with terrifying thoughts of the morning.

The science of everyday computer science

Jakub Jarzyński – guest

I have been developing back-end applications for 10 years, currently at a foreign startup. For my colleagues, I didn’t study “informatics” but “computer science”. Of course, we all know what a computer is, but do you know how to estimate how much of your everyday work is “science”? We will show you that the more of it, the better. Brace up for a 40-minute tour of rectangles, arrows, TDD and DDD. Along the way, we will also sneak in a tip or two on how to save more than 40 hours of work per year in the next 10 years.

20:10 – 20:50

Linux Terminal — boost your efficiency!

Daniel Pokusa – guest

Many popular solutions have recently begun to offer their own console apps (CLI), such as, for instance, Git, Gradle, Maven, Quarkus, Npm, Ng, Aws or Kubectl. Why do you think that is? Join my talk and learn more about the Linux terminal and how it can be useful to all programmers (no matter the system they use!). I will also recommend a set of other helpful tools and show how you can use them to pull off many daily tasks effectively (and impressively!). No matter if you are just starting out on Linux or already begin your day by booting up your favorite Linux terminal emulator, this talk is for you!
